Bengal: The old domestic terminal building will be demolished for the new terminal at Kolkata Airport.

A new plan is being made to move VIP cars away from the footpath at Kolkata Airport. The authorities have considered building a new terminal, through which separate entry and exit arrangements can be made for VIPs. The old domestic terminal building will be demolished for the new terminal. However, this plan has not been approved yet. A senior official of the Airports Authority of India said that they are planning a system in Kolkata similar to the one in Delhi. There is a separate exit for VIPs at Delhi Airport, where their cars are also parked. We have proposed to make similar arrangements at Kolkata Airport also. This has to be approved by the headquarters in Delhi. There is a separate exit for VIPs at the extreme right end of the extended terminal building. “VIP car parking will also be there, so there will be no need to park these cars in front of the gates meant for other passengers,” he said. The official said it is impossible to remove the VIP cars, which are parked in front of the terminal building at the arrivals level. They are parked for long periods of time. Whenever our staff or people from the parking agency tried to remove the cars, the guards and sometimes the police turned them away. The official says the cars belong to the Bengal government, the Center and other states. It is difficult to send such complaints about parking of vehicles belonging to many departments of the government.

Plan to make separate gate for VIP

Kolkata airport authorities have created a designated parking area for such vehicles on the airport approach, where the road turns to the right. The signage for VIP parking, which was restored last week, has now gone missing again. Sources say that the first lane outside the terminal at the arrivals level is seen filled with a long queue of cars. Vehicles with beacons and boards or stickers announcing the transportation of senior government officials remain parked in front of the terminal for long periods, causing a lot of inconvenience. Many vehicles are also parked in the other lane, which causes traffic jams and sometimes the situation goes out of control. Common passengers have to struggle to reach their cars or app cabs with their luggage in front of Gate No. 3A.
