Golden history of Ballia in freedom struggle

In fact, Ballia, the land of Maharishi Bhrigu, is not unique in the whole country. The red of this soil, the immortal fighter Mangal Pandey raised the bugle of the first rebellion against the British rule, and five years before the country got independence, the name of Ballia is also recorded in the name of Ballia. . Resistance to injustice and sacrifice in the interest of the country is the special identity of rebel Ballia.

If the word Baagi Ballia is searched in the pages of history, then in its meaning, there is a feeling of doing something for the national broad goal more than opposition. In the hearts of people, Ballia got the title of rebel on 19 August 1942. Ten days before this date, Mahatma Gandhi started a decisive movement against the British rule by giving the slogan of British Quit India.

Mahatma Gandhi’s slogan echoed all over India. However, Ballia, the birthplace of Mangal Pandey, who first revolted from the military cantonment of Meerut in the freedom struggle of 1857, had a different passion. Gandhian revolutionary Chittu Pandey was the one who fueled this passion. Gandhian revolutionary because he had passion and passion like Mangal Pandey in his veins and he was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. The passion was more visible in the Gandhian movements at the local level under his leadership.

Following the slogan of British Quit India, the people of Ballia became completely bent on rebellion under the leadership of Chittu Pandey. Meanwhile, Chittu Pandey and his associates were arrested and put in jail. After this, such a torch of revolution was lit in Ballia, in which everyone from general public to farmers, businessmen, youth and students jumped.

In Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, on this day, August 19, 1942, the jack of the British was thrown away from the Baria police station and the brave revolutionaries hoisted the tricolor at the police station amidst the hail of bullets. In this, 19 revolutionaries were martyred by the bullets of the British and three revolutionaries had died in jail due to the torture of the British.

Various programs have been organized every year in the memory of the martyr revolutionaries. During the freedom movement, on this day the revolutionaries of Ballia broke the chains of the British rule and declared themselves independent. He also implemented his own governance system and named it Independent Ballia Republic and made Hanumanganj Kothi its headquarters.

Government run till 22 August

Revolutionary Chittu Pandey also ran the government here till 22 August 1942, which was considered a direct challenge to the British rule and it was discussed in the whole country. After this, on the night of 23 August, the British captured it again.

Under the leadership of Sher-e-Ballia Chittu Pandey, the jailed fighters freed themselves by breaking the gate, occupied the chair of the District Magistrate and nominated themselves as Collector. The echo of Ballia’s independence echoed till London. 84 people were martyred in this battle. After this freedom struggle, the whole country got strength. The entire district celebrates this freedom as Ballia Sacrifice Day every year on 19th August by remembering the freedom fighters who lost their lives in the said movement.

Because of this people got angry

After the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru during the freedom movement, the district administration arrested Chittu Pandey along with his comrades Jagannath Singh and Parmatmanand Singh. Due to this, the people of Ballia were very angry. Meanwhile, on August 9, 1942, along with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, all the members of the Congress Working Committee were arrested and sent to an unknown place. In protest against this, the spark of the movement flared up from this day itself, which shook the British rule.

The people of Ballia held the torch of revolution

Demonstrations and hartals started at every major places in Ballia. The public got completely involved in the work of cutting wires, uprooting railway lines, breaking bridges, cutting roads, attacking police stations and government offices and hoisting the national flag on them. On August 14, the Azad train of university students from Varanasi Cantt reached Ballia station. As soon as they came to know about this, the students of all the schools left the classes and joined the movement. The enthusiasm of the public increased many times due to the coming of young students.

After this, a secret meeting was held in Pandeypur village on 15th August. During this, it was decided that by 17 and 18 August, tehsils and important places of Ballia district would be captured and attacked on 19 August. On the morning of 17th August, people stormed and captured Rasda Bairia, Gadwar, Sikandarpur, Haldharpur, Nagra, Ubhaon etc. places. After this, till August 18, the agitators attacked 15 police stations and completely burnt eight police stations. Many railway stations were burnt. Rail tracks were uprooted at hundreds of places. 18 policemen were killed. The weapons of many policemen were snatched away.

The strength of the movement was seen in Ballia on August 19

After capturing all the tehsils of Ballia district, the people reached the district headquarters of Ballia on 19th August. Outside the jail, about 50 thousand people were demanding the release of their leader Chittu Pandey and his companions by filling their hands with plough, pestle, spade, shovel, hasua, slingshot, meta with snakes and scorpions.

Seeing the anger of the people, the then District Magistrate Jagdishwar Nigam and Superintendent of Police Riyazuddin had to come on the spot and both the officers went inside the jail and talked to the agitators. After this, 150 Satyagrahis including Chittu Pandey, Radha Mohan Singh, Vishwanath Choubey, Jagannath Singh were released. After this, all the government institutions of the district were guarded by the national government. All government employees were locked in the police line.

These revolutionaries sacrificed

Apart from Kaushal Singh, Nirbhay Kumar Singh, resident of Gonhiya Chhapra, Devbasan Koiri, Narsingh Rai, resident of Vishunpura, Ramjanam Gond, resident of Milky, Tiwari, Vidyapati Gond, resident of Milky Mathia, Ramprasad Upadhyay, resident of Chandpur, Manager Singh, resident of Tolagudarirai, Ramdev Kumhar, resident of Sonbarsa, were martyred. And the name of Bairia resident Rambriksh Rai is included.

Apart from this, Ramangina Sonar, Chhathu Kamkar, Devki Sonar, Shubhanthahi resident Dharmadev Mishra, Murarpatti resident Shriram Tiwari, Bahuara resident Muktinath Tiwari, Shripalpur resident Vikram Sonar and Vicky Ram, Bhagwanpur resident Bhim Ahir also sacrificed their lives.

On the other hand, three revolutionaries including Gadadharnath Pandey, resident of Dayachhapra, Gaurishankar Rai, resident of Madhubani, Ramrekha Sharma, resident of Gangapur were martyred in prison torture. Apart from this, many other unknown revolutionaries were put behind bars.
