Ashwini Vaishnav will hold a meeting with social media platforms to curb DeepFake.

Ashwini Vaishnaw To Hold Meeting On Deepfake Issue: Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has called a meeting with representatives of social media platforms tomorrow i.e. Thursday on the issue of ‘Deepfakes’. A source gave this information. The move reflects concerns over misuse of technology and the government’s resolve to encourage digital platforms to crack down on ‘deepfakes’. In ‘Deepfake’, using artificial intelligence (AI), someone else is shown in place of the person present in a photo or video. There is so much similarity in it that it is very difficult to differentiate between real and fake.

Will meet representatives of social media platforms

According to a source, Vaishnav will meet representatives of social media platforms on the issue of deepfakes on November 23. Recently, several ‘deepfake’ videos targeting several Bollywood actors were circulated on social media platforms. Many people had expressed their displeasure on this. This also raised many questions regarding misuse of technology and equipment to create fake content. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had warned on Friday that ‘deepfakes’ created with artificial intelligence (AI) could cause a major crisis. Can create dissatisfaction in the society. He also urged the media to raise awareness and educate people about its misuse. At the same time, Vaishnav cautioned that if the platforms do not take adequate steps to remove ‘deepfakes’, they will not be given the ‘safe harbor immunity’ currently given under the IT Act.

Notice was issued to companies

The government had recently issued a notice to companies on this issue. The minister had also clarified that companies will have to take more aggressive steps to deal with such materials. Vaishnav, while talking to journalists last weekend, had also said that a meeting would be called with representatives of all forums on this issue. On the question of inviting big platforms like Meta and Google to the meeting, the minister had given a positive answer.
