GPAI Summit 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned about the danger of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based tools falling into the hands of terrorists and said that there is a need to create a global framework for the ethical use of AI. Prime Minister Modi announced global partnership on Artificial Intelligence. Addressing the (GPAI) summit, he said that AI can become the biggest source of development in the 21st century but it also has the equal power to destroy the 21st century. He said, apart from the challenge of deepfakes, cyber security and data theft, there is a big threat of AI tools falling into the hands of terrorists. If AI equipped weapons reach terrorist organizations then global security will face a major threat. We have to look into this and make a concrete plan to prevent misuse of AI.

Can play a big role in development

The Prime Minister said that, when India was the President of the G20 group, it had proposed to create a responsible, human-centric governance framework for AI. He said, just as we have agreements and protocols for various international issues, we also have to create a global framework for the ethical use of AI. It will also include a protocol for testing and deploying high-risk and frontier AI tools. Describing India as committed to responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, he said that this technology has the potential to radically change India’s technology landscape. Keeping this in mind, the government will soon start an AI mission. He said that AI has the potential to transform sectors including healthcare and can play a big role in sustainable development. However, one has to be very careful regarding this.

The direction of AI will depend on human and democratic values

The Prime Minister said that the direction of AI will depend on human and democratic values. If attention is paid to the ethical, economic and social concerns related to it, trust in AI will increase. He said that privacy concerns will go away once the data is secure. He said, we have to complete the global framework within a stipulated time frame. This is necessary for the security and progress of the world and humanity. Calling for making AI safe and reliable, he said that the discussion should be on how to make the information coming out of AI reliable.

Trying to harness the full potential of AI

The Prime Minister said that only if AI is made all-inclusive, it will yield more inclusive results. He said, AI is not just a new technology, but a worldwide movement. He said that the use of data and algorithms should be free from any bias. He said that the negative aspects related to AI are a matter of concern. The Prime Minister said, AI is transformative, it is up to us to make it transparent. He said that the world is entering a new era with AI. He said, AI can become the biggest basis for deciding the future. India is committed to responsible and ethical use of AI. He said, today India is an important player in AI talent and new ideas related to AI. Young Indian technocrats and researchers are exploring the limits of AI. Prime Minister Modi said that his government will try to harness the full potential of AI for social and inclusive development.
