In Raghunathpur village of Bhagwanpur police station area on Wednesday morning, a young man who was running away after seeing the police who had gone to conduct a raid, died by drowning in a pit. The deceased was 24-year-old Kundan Kumar, son of Ram Ekbal Sahni, resident of Raghunathpur village. Angered by this incident, villagers blocked Hajipur-Muzaffarpur NH 22 at around 11 o’clock. After this, the family members and villagers started creating ruckus by accusing the police of beating the youth and killing him and throwing away the dead body. Information about the incident was given to many police stations. Hajipur Sadar SDO and SDPO reached the spot along with the police, pacified the angry people and assured them of compensation of Rs 4 lakh and sent the body to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem. According to the information, on Wednesday morning the police of Bhagwanpur police station had reached Raghunathpur village to raid against the liquor traders. Seeing the police, Kundan Kumar started running. During this time, he died due to drowning after falling into a pit filled with water.

Bhagwanpur converted into police cantonment

Bhagwanpur police reached the spot after about two hours on receiving information about road jam. As soon as they saw the police, people became angry and tried to chase them away, but the police showed strictness. Even after a lot of explaining, the angry people did not calm down. After this, Hajipur Sadar SDO Rambabu Baitha, Sadar SDPO Omprakash, Lalganj SDPO Gopal Mandal, Lalganj Inspector Rakesh Kumar, Police Station Head Sarai Mani Bhushan Kumar reached the spot along with a large number of police forces. He explained to the angry villagers and the family members of the deceased and pacified them by assuring them of compensation of Rs 4 lakh as per rules. Panchayat head Sudhir Prasad Singh provided Rs 5,000 to the family of the deceased for cremation. After the commotion subsided, the police sent the body to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.

Commissioner stuck in traffic jam

During the road jam, the Commissioner of Tirhut region also got stuck in the jam while going from Muzaffarpur to Patna. On receiving information about the commissioner being stuck in the jam, BDO Bhagwanpur reached near the commissioner’s car stuck in the jam. From there his vehicle was sent through another route. Due to the highway being blocked for about three hours, the pedestrians faced a lot of trouble in the scorching heat. Even after the end of the jam, the police is camping at the jam site.

Family members accused of beating to death

In the case of the death of the youth, the family members of the deceased have alleged that Kundan Kumar was going for defecation at around 7:30 am on Wednesday morning. At the same time, the police of Bhagwanpur police station, which arrived for the raid, caught him, killed him by hitting him on the head with a stick, threw him in a pond and ran away from there. After about two-three hours the family members and villagers got information about this. In an application addressed to the Superintendent of Police, the family members have demanded an investigation into the incident and action against the guilty policemen.
