About 5.67 crore people are eligible to vote in the elections.

State police should be trusted: Rajeev Sinha

The three-tier Panchayati Raj system consists of Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad. However, the state election commissioner refrained from giving a direct answer on whether the elections would be held under the supervision of central forces, as demanded by the opposition parties. Rural elections in any state are not conducted under the supervision of central forces. Then why should Bengal be an exception? Mocking the opposition for complaining of lack of time to file nominations, Ghosh said, ‘If they don’t get a candidate, we will give them a candidate.’

Unilateral announcement of panchayat elections ‘murder of democracy’

The opposition BJP criticized the unilateral announcement by the SEC as ‘murder of democracy’ and questioned the feasibility of filing nominations for over 70,000 seats within just 7 days. Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari tweeted, ‘For the first time, panchayat elections have been announced unilaterally without a single all-party meeting being convened at block level, district level or state level.’
