A record 6.77 crore Income Tax Returns (ITR) were filed till July 31 for the assessment year 2023-24. Of these, 53.67 lakh people had filed returns for the first time. According to a statement by the Income Tax Department, this number is 16.1 percent more than the 5.83 crore returns filed till the same period last year. But, now the problem is that the returns of 31 lakh taxpayers who have filed returns have not yet come. It is being told that the income tax payers have not yet verified after paying the tax. Explain that if you do not verify the income tax return, then the ITR will not be considered filled. For this, 30 days time is given by the department. Refund will not be processed by the department due to non-verification. In such a situation, these taxpayers will have to file income tax return again.

Only 6.59 crore taxpayers verified

According to the information provided by the Income Tax Department, till August 23, more than 6.91 crore people had filed returns, but only 6.59 crore taxpayers have verified their ITRs. That is, 31 lakh people have not yet verified their returns. The time of 30 days for verification is about to end. The department wrote on the X platform that dear taxpayers, complete the e-filing process today itself! Please find below the steps required for e-verification of the return. Remember to verify your ITR within 30 days of filing it. Delayed verification may attract late fee as per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

How to do e-verification

After filing income tax, it is necessary to do e-verification. For this, 120 days time is given by the Income Tax Department. To get the verification done, first of all, e-file your income tax return. After e-filing the return, you are given options to select e-verification. You can verify your return using e-verification and get refund without internet banking or demat account linking bank account. Various methods are available to you for e-verification. In this there is Aadhaar OTP based verification. Perform e-verification by receiving OTP with your Aadhaar number. Apart from this, you can also get verification done with your bank account. You can also do the verification using your demat account.

Income Tax Department commissions e-advance ruling in Delhi, Mumbai

The Income Tax Department said that Advance Ruling Boards have been made operational in Delhi and Mumbai. These boards will work through email-based procedures and conduct hearings through video conferences. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) constituted three boards in September 2021 for advance ruling. Along with this, the scheme of e-advance ruling was launched to make the entire process of advance ruling more efficient, transparent and accountable with minimum direct physical intervention. CBDT said in a statement that the Advance Ruling Board has started functioning in Delhi and Mumbai. These boards have started working through e-mail-based procedures and conducting hearings through video conferences.

Income Tax Department’s website gets a new look with more features

Income Tax Department launched its website in a new look with user friendly interface, improved features and new modules. The new website was launched by Nitin Gupta, Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) at a ‘Chintan Shivir’ organized by the Directorate of Income Tax (Systems) in Udaipur. In order to improve the taxpayer experience and keep pace with the new technology, the Income Tax Department has revamped its national website with a user-friendly interface, enhanced features and new modules, the CBDT said in a statement. The new website has been redesigned with a mobile friendly layout. The website also has a ‘Mega Menu’ for content with new features.
