According to the affidavit filed along with the nomination papers of BJP candidate from Cooch Behar seat and Union Minister of State Nishith Pramanik for the Lok Sabha elections, 14 criminal cases are pending against him.

So many cases were filed against Nishith Pramanik in 2018 and 2020.

Of these 14 cases, 9 were registered between 2018 and 2020. Other cases were registered between 2009 and 2014. After being expelled from Trinamool Congress in 2018, Nishith Pramanik joined BJP in 2019. Nishith Pramanik was expelled from Trinamool for fielding several independent candidates against Trinamool candidates in Cooch Behar during the Panchayat elections in 2018.

Criminal cases said to be politically motivated

While terming the criminal cases against Nishith Pramanik as politically motivated, a BJP district official said that most of the FIRs were registered against him after he broke ties with All India Trinamool Congress and then joined BJP.

The cases registered against the Union Minister include allegations ranging from attempt to murder, rioting to encroachment and illegal assembly. Nishith Pramanik said in his affidavit that charges have not been framed against him in any of the cases registered against him.

In 2019, Nishith had declared 11 cases against himself.

Nishith Pramanik had declared 11 pending criminal cases against him in his affidavit filed before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In the affidavit for the year 2024, the minister mentioned that his annual income in the year 2023-24 would be Rs 12.34 lakh. According to the affidavit, his annual income in the year 2022-23 was Rs 10.72 lakh.

Pramanik had won the Lok Sabha elections from Cooch Behar on BJP ticket.

Nishith Pramanik has said that he was an assistant teacher in a primary school, while his wife is a housewife. Nishith Pramanik had won the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 elections on BJP ticket. This seat was earlier held by Trinamool.
